Arts Council of Wales | The Well-being of Future Generations and Sustainable Development

The Well-being of Future Generations and Sustainable Development

Our commitment to the aims of the Well-being of Future Generations and sustainable development is fundamental to our work.

Our Well-being of Future Generations Policy Statement sets out how the Arts Council of Wales implements its vision of developing and sustaining a creative Wales, where the arts are central to the life and well-being of the nation.

The Well-being of Future Generations

The Well-being of Future Generations (2015) Act aims to improve the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales, and strengthen governance arrangements within the public sector.

The Council is committed to investing in the future of the people of Wales and we aim to ensure all our organisational actions and policies are resilient.

The 7 Well-being Goals

To make sure that relevant public bodies are all working towards the same vision, the Act puts in place seven Well-being Goals. One of these Goals specifically refers to arts and culture – "a Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language".

The 7 key goals to improve the well-being of Wales:

  1. A Prosperous Wales
  2. A Resilient Wales
  3. A Healthier Wales
  4. A More equal Wales
  5. A Wales of Cohesive communities
  6. A Wales of Vibrant Culture and Thriving Welsh language
  7. A Globally responsible Wales

Our Sustainable Development Annual Report 2015/16 and Action Plan 2016/17 builds on work that we currently do and that will continue. It also identifies new objectives for the current year.

It’s informed by what we have learnt from listening to a variety of people and organisations and reflects our aspirations as a Council to set the bar high on this issue.

Our progress so far

From the day-to-day management and running of our offices to policy development and our entire corporate infrastructure, planning, training and financial strategies, we are committed to placing the sustainable development principle at the heart of what we do.

The monitoring of the Arts Council of Wales’ responsibilities is something that Council has taken very seriously. It has set the bar high and is very keen - not only to meet our obligations fully - but to champion the principles underpinning the legislation. We believe that they are important in creating a fairer, more compassionate and creative world. The day to day responsibility for ensuring that we are making progress with this work has been delegated to a WFG Monitoring Group.
